Here a skilled crafts man is binding the top of the hedge using hazel rods. The hazel is cut from woodland managed through coppicing to maintain its longevity. Coppicing has been practiced in the British Isles for millennia as a method for healthy productive woodland to provide wood for many uses.

This hedge between two grass fields had been flattened back by a digger to allow the erection of a fence sometime in the preceding years. It was also tangled with years of discarded agricultural rubbish – sheets of corrugated metal etc. This made it tough work to clear prior to laying down the pleachers (the tall stems). This huge Leylandii hedge was completely obscuring a fantastic view over the meadows at Titchmarsh. The client asked for the height to be reduced to restore the vista. Around 20 trees made up the hedge. Each stem had to be section felled from within, working along the line whilst maintaining an even level.
